Should B2B Companies in India Advertise on ChatGPT? A Decision Framework

By Vikas Goyal  ·  August 2026  ·  6 min read

Every new ad platform launch produces the same two overreactions in marketing teams: the group that rushes in because it's new, and the group that ignores it entirely because it's unproven. Neither instinct is well suited to ChatGPT Ads in India specifically, because the targeting restrictions built into this launch make it a much better fit for some B2B categories than others, in ways that are knowable in advance without spending a single rupee.

The One Fact That Should Drive Your Decision First

Ads only appear to logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers see no ads at all. If your buyer is a senior enterprise decision-maker who is likely using ChatGPT through a company-provisioned Plus or Business account, this channel currently cannot reach them, full stop, regardless of how good your creative or targeting is. This single fact rules the channel in or out for a large share of Indian B2B categories before any other consideration matters.

A Simple Fit Test

Ask three questions about your actual buyer:

  1. Is my buyer plausibly a Free or Go tier ChatGPT user? Founders, solopreneurs, SMB owners, and individual professionals researching a purchase on their own account are far more likely to fit than an enterprise buyer using a company ChatGPT seat.
  2. Does my category involve real research-and-compare behaviour inside a conversational tool? Categories where people genuinely ask an AI assistant open-ended comparison and evaluation questions are a better fit than categories driven by referral, RFP, or offline relationship-based buying.
  3. Can I afford a small, disciplined test without disrupting my core channel mix? The ₹725 daily floor makes this accessible, but "accessible" doesn't mean "free of opportunity cost" if it pulls attention from channels you already understand.

Categories Likely to See Early Value

B2B SaaS and tools with a self-serve or freemium buying motion, professional services and consultants targeting SMB and solo-founder clients, and education or upskilling products aimed at individual professionals are the categories most likely to have their actual buyer sitting on a Free or Go tier account today.

Categories That Should Probably Wait

Enterprise software with long, committee-based sales cycles, categories sold primarily through field sales or channel partners, and anything where the buyer is a senior executive almost certainly on a company-paid ChatGPT seat are weaker fits for this specific launch configuration. This does not mean skip the channel forever — it means monitor whether OpenAI extends advertising to paid tiers or introduces B2B-specific placements before committing budget.

The decision in one sentence: test now if your actual buyer is an individual, SMB, or self-serve decision-maker likely to be on ChatGPT's free tiers; watch and wait if your buyer is an enterprise executive on a paid company account, and revisit this decision every quarter as the ads product expands.
