ChatGPT Ads Launch in India: What B2B Marketers Need to Know

By Vikas Goyal  ·  August 2026  ·  7 min read

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads in India, starting with a rollout to Free and Go tier users in late August 2026, with self-serve access to the ChatGPT Ads Manager opening on September 4 with daily budgets starting as low as ₹725. WPP and Omnicom are OpenAI's first agency partners for the India launch, and more than 50 brands intended to go live with adverts in the first week. For B2B marketers in India, this is not a channel to ignore, but it is also not one to rush into without understanding exactly what it is and isn't yet.

What's Actually Launching

Ads appear as a sponsored link in a visually distinct, clearly labelled box shown beneath a complete AI answer, never interrupting the response itself, with a headline, description, and call to action. Only logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers see ads; subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education continue to see no advertising at all. That last point matters a great deal for B2B marketers, because it directly shapes who this channel can and cannot reach.

Why India, and Why Now

India is OpenAI's second-largest ChatGPT market, with more than 100 million weekly users as of February 2026. A market of that scale on the free and Go tiers gives OpenAI enough inventory to test advertising economics before expanding more aggressively into paid tiers or other geographies. It also means Indian marketers are not being handed a scaled-down regional pilot; they are getting access to one of the platform's largest and most active user bases from day one.

The Targeting Model Is Different From What You're Used To

Ad targeting in ChatGPT is context-based: the system considers the conversation itself, the ad creative, and the associated landing page to decide when an ad is relevant, rather than relying on demographic or behavioural profiles built from browsing history the way most programmatic display advertising does. Advertisers do not get access to individual conversations, chat histories, or memories — only aggregated campaign metrics such as impressions and clicks. This is closer in spirit to contextual search advertising than to social media's interest-graph targeting, which changes how a campaign should be briefed and measured.

Who This Matters Most For Right Now

Because targeting is driven by what someone is actively trying to figure out in the moment, categories where people spend real time researching, comparing, and evaluating before a decision are the ones most likely to see early value — which describes a large share of B2B buying behaviour. That said, the Free and Go tier restriction means a meaningful share of high-value enterprise decision-makers, who are disproportionately likely to be on paid ChatGPT tiers through work accounts, will not see these ads at all today. This is the single most important caveat for a B2B marketer to weigh before allocating budget.

A Realistic First Move for B2B Marketers in India

Treat this as a small, structured test rather than a channel to fund at scale immediately. The daily budget floor of ₹725 makes a low-risk pilot genuinely accessible even for a modest marketing budget. Run it against a narrow, well-defined use case — ideally a product or service with a real self-serve or SMB buying motion where a Free or Go tier user is a plausible actual buyer, not just an early-career researcher gathering information for someone else's decision.

What we don't know yet: pricing dynamics at scale, how competitive specific categories will get once all 50+ launch brands are live, and whether OpenAI extends ads to paid tiers over time. Treat any specific CPC or CPM benchmark you see quoted this early with caution, and run your own small test to get real numbers for your category before committing meaningful budget.
