Writing Ad Copy for ChatGPT Ads: What Works Differently in India

Ad copy that has worked for years on Google and LinkedIn is written to win in a competitive environment: multiple listings on a page, a scroll-past feed, a user actively comparing options at a glance. ChatGPT ads appear in a fundamentally different environment — directly beneath one complete, considered AI answer, in a clearly labelled sponsored box with a headline, description, and call to action — and that difference should change how the copy is written, not just where it's placed.

Write Like a Credible Next Step, Not an Interruption

A user has just received a thoughtful, conversational answer to a real question. Ad copy that reads as generic brand promotion feels jarring in that moment; copy that reads as a natural, useful continuation of the answer performs better. If ChatGPT just explained the factors to consider when choosing a payroll provider for a small business, your ad copy should read like the logical next step for someone who just absorbed that explanation, not like an unrelated pitch competing for attention.

Match the Specificity of the Answer Above It

AI answers tend to be specific and structured. Ad copy that stays vague ("Discover the best solution for your business") will feel noticeably lower-quality by comparison. Lead with a specific, concrete claim instead — a number, a named use case, or a direct statement of what the product does for the exact situation just discussed.

Three Copy Patterns Worth Testing

What to Avoid

Avoid copy that tries to argue against the AI's answer or position your product as the "real" solution the AI supposedly missed — this reads as adversarial to the platform experience and is unlikely to build trust with the user. Avoid excessive superlatives and unverifiable claims, which will stand out poorly next to the plainly-stated, hedge-appropriate language AI answers typically use.

Testing Discipline for a New Format

Because there is no large public library of proven ChatGPT ad copy patterns yet, run genuine A/B tests within your own campaigns rather than assuming a pattern that works on Google will transfer directly. Track click-through rate and, more importantly, downstream lead quality for each variant, since a copy style that generates more clicks but attracts a worse-fit visitor is not actually the winning variant.

The single-sentence rule: if your ad copy would feel out of place if a knowledgeable friend had just given the same answer the AI gave, rewrite it before it goes live.
