Most digital advertisers in India have spent a decade learning to think in terms of audience profiles: demographics, interests, behaviours, lookalikes. ChatGPT's targeting model asks advertisers to think differently, and understanding the difference is the single most important thing to get right before writing a campaign brief.
ChatGPT ad targeting is context-based: the system considers the content of the ongoing conversation, the ad's own creative (title and copy), and the associated landing page to decide when an ad is relevant to show — introducing a signal based on what someone is actively trying to figure out in that moment, rather than who they are demographically. Advertisers do not get access to individual conversations, chat histories, or memories; reporting is limited to aggregated metrics like impressions and clicks.
Unlike LinkedIn, there is no declared-identity layer to target at launch. Your relevance to a conversation is inferred from what's being discussed, not from who the platform believes the user is professionally.
Because the system reads your ad's own title and copy as a relevance signal, vague or generic ad creative is a targeting liability, not just a conversion liability. Specific, clearly-scoped ad copy helps the system understand which conversations you actually want to appear in.
The associated landing page is part of what the system evaluates for relevance, which means a mismatched or generic landing page can hurt targeting quality, not just post-click conversion — a departure from search advertising, where landing page quality mainly affects Quality Score and conversion rather than initial ad relevance.
The lack of access to individual conversation data is a genuine limitation relative to what advertisers are used to from platforms with rich behavioural profiles. It also means less risk of misfired targeting based on stale or inaccurate profile data, and it should reassure privacy-conscious Indian buyers that their specific queries aren't being handed to advertisers — a point worth including in your own customer-facing communication if your company chooses to advertise on the platform.
The mental model to adopt: think of ChatGPT ad targeting as closer to "matching a genuinely relevant answer to a genuine question" than "reaching a defined audience segment." Campaigns built around specificity and topical relevance will likely outperform campaigns built around broad brand awareness in this format.
