What happens when a length is BETWEEN two whole numbers, like between 2 cm and 3 cm? We split the gap into smaller equal parts — that's a decimal!
➗Tenths: Split 1 unit into 10 equal parts. Each part is one-tenth, written 0.1.
🔬Hundredths: Split each tenth into 10 more parts — now you have hundredths, written 0.01.
🔟10 of one = 1 of the next: 10 hundredths = 1 tenth, just like 10 tenths = 1 whole unit.
📖Reading them: 2.7 is "two and seven-tenths". 4.45 is "four and forty-five hundredths".
➕Adding/subtracting: Line up the decimal points, then add/subtract tenths with tenths, hundredths with hundredths — carrying/borrowing just like whole numbers!
Try thisSonu's lower arm is 2.7 units, upper arm is 3.6 units. Total = (2+3) + (7+6) tenths = 5 + 13 tenths = 5 + 1.3 = 6.3 units
